‘A Room For Romeo’ Brass is a mixture of drama and comedy, written and directed by British filmmaker, Shane Meadows. Set in the Midlands, England, the movie eagerly depicts poverty and violence. The film is about the quest of two friends whose friendship and characters are tested by a stranger. It also depicts the love of a father of his family, a father who would give his life to protect them. This movie has also been nominated to the British Independent Film Awards for Best British Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay caegories.
The movie centres on the challenges and problems that Romeo and Gavin encounter. Andrew Shrim plays the role of Romeo Brass, a twelve-year old boy. Gavin Woolley, played by Ben Marshall, is the childhood best friend of Romeo. Morell, played by Paddy Consadine, is an eccentric who tests the relationship of the two youngsters. Ladine Brass, played by Vicky McClure, is the sister of Romeo. The two boys share the same habits, attitude, and problems in the family. The father of Romeo is a cruel man and maddens easily while Gavin’s dad pays no attention to him. The climax of the story occurs when Morell enters the scene. Gavin has an operation on his back and is bedridden. Consequently, Romeo is confused and misses his friend. This is the time when Morell starts to befriend Romeo. During the absence of Gavin, the two new friends spend more time together and Romeo even make ways to let Morell and Ladine be close to each other, and eventually fall in love. However, no matter how much Romeo insists, Ladine rejects Morell, which causes much trouble for everybody. As a result, the disapproved lover becomes violent. The situation makes the two old friends, Romeo and Gavin, closer again because of their effort to defeat Morell, along with their fathers who willingly sacrifice their lives just to defend their families. Will they win over Morell? What will happen to Morell?
‘A Room For Romeo’ Brass offers several lessons about the attachment behaviour of children and friends. It shows that true friendship stands still no matter what the changing world will offer. The movie is perfect for bonding with your best friends or circle of friends. There are moments that will make the audiences laugh, but it will definitely capture everybody’s heart and, maybe, make someone cry. The scene of Morell crying alone in their house and pulling back to show a type of gas container will surely make everybody wonder what is running in his head. The film is a dramatic one, filled with remarkable performances, humorous dialogues and some spectacular scenes. The cast plays their roles superbly, with special mention to the splendid performance of Paddy Consadine. However, the only weak point of the film is its musical background, a loud and disturbing sound of guitar, which does not match the film’s theme. Overall, the film is a perfect and an ideal one to catch. Watching this movie wastes nothing at all because it is worth the money and the time spent.
